Is the internet beneficial or detrimental?

The empire of the internet has conquered almost all territories: maybe there are a few countries left in Africa that don't know about it, but the number of people who don't consider the internet to be one of the things they can't live without is quite insignificant. The internet is one of the greatest creation of mankind and is definitely beneficial to us in many ways.

Having such an influence on our lives, it has both harmful and beneficial effects. Beneficial because it provides us all the information we need from all over the world, it entertains us and at the same time it helps us find more about a topic we are interested in. On the other hand, the internet destroy communication between the members of the family and make them behave like teenagers as they will not be able to have time to communicate and spend quality time with the rest of their family.

There is also the case of the famous "paparazzi" who make the lives of the VIPs a living hell, who don't care about the right to privacy and do whatever it takes to find out spicy details about singers or actors. That really shines a bad light on media as that means that people can actually hack into other people’s computer and get personal information regardless who it comes from.

Some people also create seemingly harmless virus that hides in your system when you download a movie or song. These viruses will steal your credit card account and password taking money from you without you noticing. The above examples are examples which can be seen to threaten the personal safety and rights of a person.

However, as long as people are able to take care of their own personal information and not divulge them to total strangers and also not to pay for things online, it should be relatively safe. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of all the people who use the web to install the latest virus-protection software.

Today, the internet has become a form of manipulation of the population and this affects the society's capacity to make a decision on its own. Imagine the amount of information one can get at the click of a mouse. Most of the people will also not be able to verify whether these things are facts or just biased opinions. Hence it can be said that the internet is a good form of manipulation of the general population.

On the contrary there are times when the internet newspapers will help their readers as they become forms of protest on a certain subject. If you want the president of the country to find out you are not pleased with the government's results you write a letter to the online newspaper publish it. This way, you know for sure the president will find out about it while having breakfast, as almost everybody reads the online newspaper in the morning, including the president.

Hence from the above, you can indeed see that the internet provides not only a fast and efficient way of communication and exchanging of ideas. Also using the diverse information you can get on the net, it is definitely much easier to answer question or to check out the latest news. Last but not least, it is also a good way to express yourself through blogs or online petitions or maybe even publishing your own opinions on the net! Hence, I say that the internet is informative, powerful and expressive.

Are electronic games more beneficial or detrimental to the youths of today’s society?

With the advent of modern technology, the youths of today have many alternative forms of entertainment such as electronic handheld games like the Nintendo DualScreen and Playstation Portable as well as various computer games. But the debate on whether such games are more detrimental or beneficial to youths of today’s society continues to rage.

Arguments against such electronic games include that they distract youths from their studies. When some youths get addicted to such electronic games, they neglect their homework and their grades end up dropping, causing worry to their parents. Also, many parents are concerned that the violence inherent in some electronic games might influence their children with the potential of them replicating the violent behaviors depicted in electronic games. There have been cases of youths perpetrating mimic killings, attempting to emulate games they play.

Also, long periods of playing electronic games have been blamed for various health problems such as myopia. When youths straining their eyes on the screen of their electronic devices, their retinas get tired after a period of time. Most addicted gamers do not take a rest of 10minutes every 45minutes as recommended by experts, resulting in the condition of their eyesight worsening. Also, there have been instances of electronic games causing seizures.

However, some argue that playing electronic games are beneficial. For example, they improve hand-eye coordination. Research by a team of esteemed professors have shown that people who play electronic games frequently have better motor skills than those who did not.

Also, electronic games have the potential of improving memory. A test conducted by professors on a group of patients suffering from memory loss found that after play certain memory games on handheld electronic devices, their memory retention capabilities improved by an average of 34 percent.

Furthermore, electronic games have been seen as a form of relaxation for youths. Nowadays when studying is extremely taxing and stressful, youths turn to the sanctuary of electronic games to seek refuge from the heavy levels of stress they face. Thus as can be seen, electronic games offer youths a chance to get away from their troubles.

In conclusion, I feel that electronic games undoubtedly have many benefits and detriments. However, I feel that if electronic games are played in moderations, those benefits can be optimized and the detriments minimized. As long as youths are not addicted to such electronic games and exercise a reasonable level of self-discipline, electronic games would to affect their studies negatively, but instead aid them in relaxing. Thus whether electronic games more beneficial or detrimental to the youths of today’s society all depends on how much self-control those youths possess.

Does democracy create stability

Democracy creates stability by enabling everyone's voices to be heard and to take into consideration even the minorities. Hence, it restores representative parliamentary government. where the members represent the policies of the people, generating community involvement.

However there are people who dismiss democracy by saying that there are too many referenda and we will have one on every issue. Also, many people feel that there may also be voter fatique as participation is the voter's choice.

For Singapore’s government, in four or five years’ time the government will be repicked based on a election. It will be like our perfectorial speeches, colourfull and imaginative. Many candidates will think of how they can win the people's support to win that election and will come up with short term plans that are extremely appealing.

Thus, this like in the campaign speeches of the prefects, the elections will encourage meaningful and beneficial policies or propositions that will bring about short-term advantages to the public, rather than unpopular policies with longer term benefits so that the government stands a chance to win the public’s votes.

However once they are elected, they will be pressurized as they will get replaced if they do not fulfill their campaign promises and lead the country to prosperity. Hence, the government will have to visualise the future and fulfill short-term and long-term needs of the people.

I feel that Democarcy is a double edged sword, if everyone choses their votes wisely, they will have a good government and good policies. In many situations, it is due to a sudden 'dissappearance' of democracy that leads to conflict between the government and the poeple like in Korea.

The official who brought up the idea of bringing in US beef has resigned but the people are still protesting because they want a change in the government as the government did not seek the people's views on an important issue and hence needed to be changed.

From that you can see how important maintaining democracy in the country. The ideal of democracy being built on freedom of the people's choice is most crucial as it creates political stability and helps to prevent conflicts between government and citizens.

In conclusion, Democracy satisfies every part of a country' stability, in economic, political and social. The government can work on beneficial policies without hurting any consensus as it is the people’s choice which will benefit the country economically and socially as elections are held every four years and for the government to remain in place, they have to come up with new policies to solve new challenges the people face.

Boiling testosterone

The newspapers had created a gaint uproar on that issue and i am going to say some of my thoughts about it. The boys who took the upskirt photos were punished heavily by the police according to the newspapers. i think this is indeed a problem that will trouble many schools unless actions are taken.
While it is not the teachers' fault, i firmly believe that teachers should keep their relationships wiht the students as teacher-student relationships so as not to give the student a chance to commit such things. Students while young must still be able to learn to control themselves and not to give in to self-discipline.
On the topic of dress-code, i think that it is unfair that teachers will have to have a proper dress code just because of this. Already in Singapore there is a shortage of teachers, if dress-codes are imposed, the situation might just get worst.
Psychiatrists, when asked on the incidents of upskirting, claimed that the motivation is the sexual thrill. "Sometimes when the men do it, they are in a state of stimulation," Dr Brian Yeo was quoted as saying. "They usually regret their actions after the incident."
i believe that one of the best solutons will actually be to give lessons or give classes on this sensitive issue as the best way to address a problem is by tackling its roots and hence i believe that we should eradicate the problem by correcting the impurities or desire in our student's minds or at least prevent them from acting according to their impulse.
